Email Marketing for SMEs: Why It Still Delivers the Highest Returns

An average of €36 revenue per euro invested. Email marketing is the most underestimated channel for Belgian SMEs. Discover how to deploy it strategically.

While SMEs invest thousands of euros in Google Ads and Meta Ads, many leave the channel with the highest ROI of all largely untapped: email marketing. An average of €36 revenue per euro invested. That's not marketing hype, it's measured data from Litmus and the Data & Marketing Association across thousands of campaigns.

Yet in practice for most Belgian SMEs it looks like this: a sporadic newsletter to the entire list, without segmentation, without automation. And then concluding that email marketing doesn't work. It does work, just not like that.

Why Email Marketing Is the Strongest Channel SMEs Underestimate

  • Average ROI of €36 per euro invested (Litmus & DMA, 2026)
  • Email marketing is 40× more effective at acquiring new customers than Facebook and X combined
  • Automated email flows generate 320% more revenue than manual newsletters
  • 59% of consumers say marketing emails influence their purchasing decisions
  • 99% of email users check their inbox daily

The crucial difference from social media: your email list is your property. Facebook or Instagram can halve your reach tomorrow with an algorithm change. Your email list is something nobody can take away from you.

What Exactly Is Email Marketing and What Does It Include?

Email marketing goes beyond a monthly newsletter. A mature email strategy consists of multiple layers:

1. Newsletter (Campaign Emails)

The classic format: you periodically send an email to your list with news, offers, tips or content. Strong for customer retention and brand awareness, but not the most profitable element on its own.

2. Automated Flows (Triggered Emails)

This is where the real money is. Emails sent automatically based on a recipient's action:

  • Welcome flow: a series of 3–5 emails for new subscribers. Average open rate of 82%, the highest of all email types.
  • Abandoned cart: e-commerce customers who nearly bought but dropped off. Average conversion rate of 4.6%.
  • Post-purchase flow: thank the customer, give product tips, ask for a review.
  • Reactivation flow: re-engage contacts who haven't purchased or opened anything in 6 months.

3. Segmentation and Personalisation

Sending the same email to everyone is the fastest way to get unsubscribed. Segment your list based on purchase behaviour, interests, location or stage in the customer journey. Segmented campaigns perform dramatically better than bulk mailings. Yet only 39% of marketers apply advanced segmentation. That's your opportunity.

How Do You Start with Email Marketing as an SME?

Step 1 is choosing the right tool. For Belgian SMEs, these are the most commonly used options:

  • Mailchimp: user-friendly, free up to 500 contacts. Good for starters.
  • Brevo (formerly Sendinblue): Belgian company, GDPR-friendly, competitively priced.
  • Klaviyo: the standard for e-commerce. Powerful automation and integrations with Shopify, WooCommerce.
  • ActiveCampaign: strong for B2B with complex nurturing flows and CRM integration.

Step 2: build your list organically. No purchased lists: they harm your sender reputation and are GDPR non-compliant. Collect email addresses via your website, at purchases, at events or via lead magnets (free guide, checklist, discount on sign-up).

Step 3: start with the welcome flow. It's the most profitable automation, the simplest to set up, and it immediately shows your team the value of email marketing.

The Technical Foundation You Need in Order

A common mistake: setting up emails without checking technical deliverability. If your domain doesn't have correctly configured SPF, DKIM and DMARC records, your emails go to spam, no matter how good the content.

  • SPF: determines which servers are allowed to send emails on behalf of your domain
  • DKIM: digital signature that confirms the authenticity of your emails
  • DMARC: policy rules that specify what happens to emails that don't pass SPF or DKIM

Your IT partner or email marketing agency can set this up in 30 minutes. Without this setup, an average of 15% of your emails never reach the inbox.

Which KPIs Do You Measure in Email Marketing?

Open rate is a popular but misleading metric, especially after Apple Mail's privacy changes. The metrics that actually matter:

  • Click-through rate (CTR): who clicks through to your website? Benchmark by sector: 1–5%.
  • Conversion rate: who buys, requests a quote or books a call after the click?
  • Revenue per email sent: the only metric that links email to your profit & loss account.
  • Unsubscribe rate: higher than 0.5% signals that your content or frequency is off.

What Does Email Marketing Cost for an SME?

Email marketing is the most cost-efficient channel of all. An overview of typical costs:

  • Tool subscription: €0–€150 per month, depending on list size and features
  • One-off flow setup (welcome, abandoned cart): €500–€2,000 via agency
  • Monthly management (strategy, templates, campaigns): €300–€800 per month
  • Total first year including setup: €4,000–€12,000

By comparison: the same investment in Google Ads returns an average of €2–€5 per euro invested. Email marketing returns an average of €36 per euro invested. The difference in returns is enormous.
